Carbs are good for you. Proteins are good for you. Fats are good for you. Eating all of them in moderation is good for you. Moderation and some exercise — and greatly reducing your intake of highly processed junk food — is all you need to maintain a healthy weight. Books like these– gimmicky schemes that promote an unbalanced diet — don’t work because it’s advocating an unnatural diet. Sooner or later you’re going to fail on this diet because you simply can’t stick to something that’s so against your nature. Eat moderately. Exercise moderately. It’s not a matter of “will power,” it’s a matter of adopting new habits — without resorting to having to obsessively count grams of fat or carbs or whatever, which (the obsesssive counting) only feels successful because it gives you a false sense of control over your body.

  2. I was disappointed with this book and I don’t use it. Recipes list carb counts but do not list fiber content. This leaves you unable to know the net carb count of these recipes. Try “500 Low Carb Recipes” by Dana Carpenter it’s excellent.

Authors are trying to peddle their own diet plan (high protien) and unless you’re interested in that, don’t bother buying this book. There are too many weird ingredients needed for many of the recipes. Not a good cookbok for the average user. I’ve had it for about a month and haven’t used one recipe.

  4. I had this book on my wish list and was excited to receive it for my birthday. But I am soo dissapointed!

It is a visually unappealing, cheap quality printed book with a poor layout. So bland vanilla, I don’t even *want* to look for a recipe in it! Even if a cookbook isn’t filled with graphic illustrations or full-color photos, it can still have an easy-to-read layout, but this book is nothing but run-on recipes and uneccesary opinions by the Drs. It appears as if they simply wrote in a word document file and printed it – no setup, no flow. Bleck. Cooking should be art, just because it’s low-carb, doesn’t mean it has to be uninviting or lifeless. As my husband (Marketing) says, only a Dr could make a cookbook so sterile!

Other than that, the recipes are good but it’s so unpleasant to look at – I’m giving the book to Goodwill.

When I bought this I though it would help with family snacks & “comfort food”. We live in a very rural area, and most of the supplies they use to prepare these foods are not available nearby. I have hit an “insulin resistance” stage of my life, with diabetes running in my family lineage. I am about 20 lbs overweight. I just thought this book was horrible. I want ways to improve our foods, not totally change them from things on our farm or found locally. The layout of the book was also bad from my view. When I get a cookbook I want a simple layout, with this there is too much chatter mixed with the recipe. Also they talk in the first chapter that you can substitute things – ie real sugar for splenda – yet not a single recipe shows conversions or how you would change their recipe. I have been limited to 50 grams of sugar per day – and I hate sugar substitutes (including splenda). To me this book was a total waste of my money & time. If you are into some health kick and want all the expense & time of these recipes then fine. But if you are looking for changes due to hitting a ‘pre-diabetic’ stage in your life stay away from this book!
